My campsite at Jumbo Rocks was located at the east end of the campground. From there you could walk out the wash, following braided paths amidst the desert shrubs. This larger painting captures this complex scene, with the tangled variety of vegetation in the foreground and a couple of sentinel Joshua trees leading to rock formations in the distance.
Joshua Tree National Park has innumerous and fascinating boulder formations and distinctive vegetation, including the eponymous Joshua trees spread across vast desert plains. In March 2023 I took a weeklong solo camping trip to the park to paint in this striking and expansive place. I completed this painting at Jumbo Rocks Campground.
