This small painting shows a view of Headstone Rock, atop a rock pile near Ryan Campground. It was fairly early in the morning, with the sun just beginning to illuminate the rocks. The upward pointing rock is about 50′ high and a climbers’ mecca.
Joshua Tree National Park has innumerous and fascinating boulder formations and distinctive vegetation, including the eponymous Joshua trees spread across vast desert plains. In March 2023 I took a weeklong solo camping trip to the park to paint in this striking and expansive place. The weather was cold and windy and the skies quickly changing, but I managed to shelter on the lee-ward side of my small camper to paint.
