Another view of Headstone Rock and the Manure Pile (as the boulder formation is named) near Ryan Campground. Quick, rough strokes capture the flattened light of midday and suggest the tumultuous weather, with wind and approaching rain.
Joshua Tree National Park has innumerous and fascinating boulder formations and distinctive vegetation, including the eponymous Joshua trees spread across vast desert plains. In March 2023 I took a weeklong solo camping trip to the park to paint in this striking and expansive place. The weather was cold and windy and the skies quickly changing, but I managed to shelter on the lee-ward side of my small camper to paint.
