I’m intrigued by the sculptural, twisting branches of the Engelmann oaks in the grove at Descanso Gardens (La Canada, CA). On this March day, I did two views in which I changed the orientation of the canvas. This horizontal painting was done earlier in the day, so there are still deep shadows in the background woods that contrast strongly with the glimmering spring grass. The oaks reach in from the sides of the canvas.
