After a week of studying Joshua trees, I decided I wanted to express all the subtle colors I saw in the bundled leaves and flower clusters. On a warm morning, the flowers were opening up, vivid against the desert blue sky.
Joshua Tree National Park has innumerous and fascinating boulder formations and distinctive vegetation, including the eponymous Joshua trees spread across vast desert plains. In March 2023 I took a weeklong solo camping trip to the park to paint in this striking and expansive place. I completed this painting at Black Rock Canyon Campground.
