This work is a study of a little side stream in the lower part of Big Santa Anita Canyon. See the slightly larger Side Stream 2 for another view. These paintings record a scene erased, as the area has been drastically changed by the Bobcat Fire (which burned through canyon September 2020), and by subsequent flooding and debris flows. All the lower vegetation is gone, and the alders stand buried in feet of rock, soil and ash washed off the sides of the mountains and into the canyon bottom. Now we’ll watch as a new stream channel forms on top of the changed surface.
